The following is a summary of the
Wireless LAN Policy
as it relates to Departments and Students.
Departments
All access points must take precautions for security and access control.
In small installations, this means enabling WEP and MAC address
restriction. In larger installations we encourage them to use the login
approach developed by OIT, and to follow either the OIT or LAWN model.
Departments are responsible for knowing all Wireless LAN activity in
their area. They are expected to coordinate channel allocation with other
units in their vicinity, and to register all access points in the registry.
Students
All access points must be registered (this includes
residence halls).
They should enable WEP and MAC address registration. [The policy
advises making it a closed network, but that may actually make management
harder, if not everyone registers their network.]
They are expected to cooperate with each other and with OIT staff on
channel allocation.
All facilities, including their access point, must use their
assigned IP address. If they have several devices, they are going to need
to do NAT.
